Closing A Business


Closing a Withholding Account

You can close your withholding account by calling 410-260-7980 from Central Maryland, or 1-800-638-2937 from elsewhere, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Please be ready to provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Telephone Number
  • Account number
  • Reason for closing the account (out of business, no employees, etc.)
  • Closing date

You can also close your account by completing and remitting the Final Report Form available in your withholding coupon booklet, or by completing Form MW506FR.

Closing a Sales and Use Tax Account

You can close your sales and use tax account by calling 410-260-7980 from Central Maryland, or 1-800-638-2937 from elsewhere, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Please be ready to provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Telephone Number
  • Account number
  • Reason for closing the account (out of business, no employees, etc.)
  • Closing date

You can also close your account by completing and remitting the Final Report Form available in your sales and use tax coupon booklet, or by completing Form 202FR and return with the final sales an d use tax return.

Closing an Unemployment Insurance Account

You can close your unemployment tax account by calling 410-949-0022 from Central Maryland, or 1-800-827-4839 from elsewhere, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Closing a Corporation

You can close your corporation by visiting the Department of Assessments and Taxation website.

Close an Alcohol Permit
  • Send a written request to close the account (must be on letterhead and signed by an officer, member or partner)
  • Return permit with the letter
  • We will verify that all returns/reports/liabilities are current before account will be closed
Close Non-resident Dealer Beer Permits
  • Send a written request to close the account (must be on letterhead and signed by an officer, member or partner)
  • Return permit with the letter
  • Send Form 1-1 with the letter to get refund of their prepay 
  • We will verify that all returns/reports/liabilities are current before account will be closed
Close Alcohol Licenses
  • Send a written request to close the account (must be on letterhead and signed by an officer, member or partner)
  • Return license with the letter
  • Close-out audit will be requested no license will be closed until audit is complete
  • We will verify that all returns/reports/liabilities are current before account will be closed
Close Tobacco Licenses
  • Send a written request to close the account (must be on letterhead and signed by an officer, member or partner)
  • Return license with the letter
  • We will verify that all returns/reports/liabilities are current before the account will be closed
Close Motor Fuel and IFTA Accounts
  • Send a written request to close the account (must be on letterhead and signed by an officer, member or partner and must include account number)

Written requests to close: Alcohol Permits, Non-resident Dealer Beer Permits, Alcohol Licenses, Tobacco Licenses and Motor Fuel and IFTA Accounts can be sent to:
